One-day class

What You’ll Learn

Skills taught in this one-day class include:

  • Threshold Braking — Braking at the threshold of lock up while avoiding a skid or spin.
  • Crash Avoidance — Maintaining control of the vehicle while maneuvering out of harm’s way.
  • Skid Control and Recovery — Maneuvering and braking on icy, snowy, or slippery surfaces and recovery from a skid or spin.
  • Defensive Driving — Consistent use of defensive techniques such as shuffle steering, aim-high vision, proper braking, and proper hand positioning for quick reaction and controlled steering.
  • Distracted and Impaired Driving — An opportunity to experience driving capabilities while distracted and when impaired.

Class requirement

Students should have at least 2 months of permitted driving experience before attending class.

Drive-time note

This class is not the state-required 6 hours of behind-the-wheel time following a 30-hour driver’s education class, but it can count toward the 50 hours a permitted driver must complete before licensing.

Scholarship or Discount Eligibility

Complete the class and submit the assigned essay to qualify for an $80 refund.

Registration requirements

Download or print the required registration paperwork after signing up. It is due by the Monday prior to class. Late paperwork means the student cannot attend and is subject to a $25 rescheduling fee.

Scholarship

Teen drivers without driving violations can apply for a State Farm Scholarship. This program is hosted by South Metro Safety Foundation and South Metro Fire Rescue. State Farm provided $10,000 in grant funds for scholarships through its Celebrate My Drive Campaign.

Weather, schedule & curriculum

SMSF does its best not to cancel; classes may be rescheduled for low attendance or unsafe weather. SMSF may modify the curriculum based on pad conditions, class size, or other extenuating circumstances.
