Introduction to Colorado GDL Laws

If you’re a teenager in Colorado who’s excited about getting your driver’s license, you should know that there are some rules you need to follow first. Colorado has a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) program in place, which means you can’t just get your license without meeting certain requirements.

In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at why we have GDL laws and the effect they have had on our new drivers.

Colorado implemented Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) laws to promote safe and responsible driving among new and inexperienced drivers. Teenage drivers are more likely to be involved in accidents than experienced drivers, and these accidents are more likely to be serious or fatal. By requiring new drivers to go through a graduated licensing program, Colorado aims to help them gain the experience and skills they need to become safe and responsible drivers over time. The GDL program allows new drivers to gradually earn more driving privileges as they gain more experience, which helps to reduce the risk of accidents caused by inexperienced drivers. Additionally, the program’s passenger and cell phone restrictions are designed to limit distractions while driving, which further promotes safe driving habits among young drivers. Overall, the implementation of GDL laws in Colorado demonstrates a commitment to reducing accidents and promoting safe driving practices among new drivers.

The implementation of Colorado’s Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) program has been successful in reducing teen fatalities on the road. According to a study conducted by the Colorado Department of Transportation, the number of fatalities involving drivers between the ages of 15 and 20 decreased by 50% after the GDL laws were put into effect. This can be attributed to the program’s focus on gradually increasing driving privileges and experience for new drivers. By requiring teens to complete a certain amount of supervised driving hours and adhere to certain restrictions, the GDL program has helped to reduce the number of accidents caused by inexperienced drivers. Overall, the results of Colorado’s GDL program demonstrate the importance of such laws in promoting safe and responsible driving among young people.

These laws may seem overwhelming to new drivers and their parents, but they have been proven to save hundreds of lives since their implementation.

We are here to make this process easier! Over the next few posts we will be delving into the GDL laws and explaining the requirements for drivers holding a permit and licensed drivers under 18.
