Automatic external defibrillators (AEDs)
Saving Lives
Automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) are the most effective means to save the life of a person that experiences sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA causes more deaths in the United States, approximately 300,000 yearly, more than any other medical condition. However, time is of essence in using an AED on a person who experiences SCA, since each minute that passes without medical intervention, chance of survival for the victim decreases by approximately 10%. Therefore, public access to these life saving devices is critical to rapid intervention and the likelihood that the victim will survive the SCA event.
Distribution
South Metro Safety Foundation has been providing AEDs to various entities (i.e., schools, churches, municipalities, businesses, individuals) throughout the greater Denver area since 2004. These devices are simple to use even for untrained people since the AEDs instruct you in the sequential steps on how to use them. There are many types of such devices available for those who wish to purchase them. Some of the devices are totally automated, some semi-automated along with some differences in the use of the device for adults versus children. All the devices are equally effective in their treatment of SCA.
Medical Approval
There are state laws requiring medical oversight of AED programs for organizations that have AEDs at their site for use when needed. As a community service, Dr. John Riccio of Centura Health, provides this medical approval / oversight at no cost for the AEDs placed by the Safety Foundation.
